90s kids, rejoice — Comedy Central announced today a reimagining of animated show The Ren & Stimpy Show.
Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment and Youth Group, didn’t say when the show will debut. However, he said a new creative team will be behind the reimagining. He also said Comedy Central will partner with the Nickelodeon Animation Group to bring the show back to life.
“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Group,” said McCarthy.
Created by John Kricfalusi, The Ren & Stimpy Show debuted in 1991 on Nickelodeon and aired until 1995. Don’t let the animated nature of the show fool you — it’s famous for its adult and dark humor.
We don’t know if the reimagining will retain the original’s darker tones. Given Nickelodeon’s focus on the younger crowd, it’s a good sign the show will debut instead on Comedy Central.
We also don’t know if Kricfalusi will be involved with the reimagined version. He left the show in 1992, though it was rumored Nickelodeon fired him. In 2018, Kricfalusi was accused of sexual misconduct with two teenagers during the 1990s.
