Square Enix first teased Shadow of the Tomb Raider a few weeks ago by announcing its September launch date. As promised, they’ve now pulled the curtain back entirely on what Lara’s unforgiving new adventure entails.
A gorgeous (and bloody) cinematic trailer expands on the previous teaser. Lara confronts an armed force, presumably the Trinity organization from past games, in the jungles of South America. As she fights her way towards a Mayan city, we see shots of a tribal ruler atop a pyramid preparing to sacrifice a frightened child. The scenes converge in a dark revelation that leaves Lara posing one question: “what will I become?”
Crystal Dynamics describes Shadow of the Tomb Raider as Lara’s “darkest hour”. The now battle-hardened warrior must prevent a Mayan apocalypse from destroying the world. In addition to gunning down foes or taking them out with her pickaxe, survival requires Lara to use the surroundings to her advantage. That means utilizing camouflage to hide and ambush targets. Furthermore, the massive jungle is the largest hub world the series has seen yet. Within the dense forest lies elaborate underwater tunnel systems and, of course, a wealth of deadly and challenging tombs. Finally, actress Camilla Luddington returns to reprise her role as Lara.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider launches September 14 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Pre-orders are open now for each of the game’s various editions. Standard Edition features the base game while the Digital Deluxe version includes the soundtrack and a bonus weapon/outfit. Croft Edition packs the Season Pass alongside the soundtrack and 3 weapons and outfits. Lastly, the Ultimate Edition bundles the Croft Edition with physical goodies such as a statue, flashlight, and bottle opener. Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s Season Pass contains exclusive challenge tombs, weapons, and outfits (7 of each, to be exact) as well as extra narrative side-content.
