Xbox’s Next-Gen Expandable Storage Won’t Be Cheap

Gotta pony up

If you want to expand the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S’ storage, Microsoft says the best option is to use an expansion card. However, the only expansion card announced so far won’t come cheap.

According to a post on the Xbox Wire blog, the upcoming 1TB Seagate Expansion Card will cost $219.99. If you’re keeping track at home, that’s almost the price of an Xbox Series S and over half the cost of the Xbox Series X.

Microsoft says the expansion card is unique in that it offers similar performance to the internal SSD of both next-gen consoles.

“The Xbox Velocity Architecture is a key innovation of our next generation consoles, delivering unprecedented speeds and performance enabling transformative gaming experiences never before possible on console,” said director of program management Jason Ronald.

“This level of consistent, sustained performance requires advanced components which comes at a higher cost than traditional hard drives or SSDs often found in PCs.”

You can still use external HDDs and SSDs on the next-gen Xbox consoles to play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. However, only the expansion cards can externally run Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S titles.

The 1TB Seagate Expansion Card is up for pre-order on Best Buy and Microsoft. If the cost is too much for your wallet, there’s hope — there might be additional expansion cards with different storage options and pricing.
