Yesterday (11/06/2020) at the PS5 reveal event many new games were announced, most of which being PlayStation exclusives. Early on we got trailers for two new Insomniac titles, these being Spiderman: Miles Morales and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
There isn’t much concrete news about Rift Apart yet apart from it looking visually incredible. It seems to be taking advantage of the PS5’s new hardware with almost no need for load screens between planets. Instead it looks like players will be activating rifts in space to instantly go from planet to planet.
We can’t be certain where Rift Apart is set as it looks like the game is going to take place within multiple dimensions. This could be a way of connecting the original set of games to the 2016 reboot. We also get to see that Ratchet and Clank will be separated for at least part of the story as Clank falls through to another dimension and meets another Lombax. If this is following the story of the future trilogy then it is fair to say that Clank may have stumbled upon the rest of Ratchet’s kind which would inevitably be a main arc of the narrative.
We also got some gameplay which will follow the main Ratchet and Clank formula with a few new twists to incorporate the new ‘rifts’. It seems Ratchet can now almost teleport to rifts littered throughout some combat arenas. This will make it easier to retreat to cover or push an attack. Larger side jumps were also emphasised throughout most of Rift Apart’s gameplay showing it almost as a new dodge mechanic.
Aside from seeing another Lombax at the end of the main trailer little is given away about the narrative. In the gameplay Ratchet and Clank discuss the return of Dr Nefarious, however don’t actually get to see him. We do see some returning planets/enemies in the rift sections such as Veldin and previously seen pirate enemies.
This trailer ultimately feels like its potentially trying to tie everything the franchise has already created together. Whilst doing this it may be continuing on with the Future Saga. Keep an eye out here for all of the latest news on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
