American video game development company Gearbox Software, most notable for their Borderlands franchise, have sent out a tweet earlier this week possibly teasing the long-awaited continuation to the highly acclaimed first-person “looter shooter.”
During the afternoon of March 12, 2019, the Gearbox Official Twitter account tweeted out a picture that just may have opened Pandora’s (not the planet from the series) box.
The picture depicts a cel-shaded highway sign: an art style synonymous with the Borderlands series. Also, synonymous with the series is a desert aesthetic much like the one featured in the opening cinematic of the first two games in the series. The highway sign appears in the foreground with that similar desert in the background. The words “March 28 Boston MA” are written on the sign and all but the “Boston” with this reddish Borderlands style font to it.
The above information also corresponds to the time and place of the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East. Gearbox just so happen to be hosting a “main theater show” at 2 pm EDT on March 28, 2019.
If Gearbox does announce the long-awaited third game to the Borderlands series at PAX East it would be nearly seven years after Borderlands 2, which released all the way back on September 18, 2012. That does not mean that Gearbox has forgotten about the lands in the meantime. Starting in 2014, and until 2017, we have seen Gearbox and publisher Take Two take the franchise in a more spin-off and re-release direction. Borderlands: The Pre-sequel, Tales from the Borderlands, the Handsome Collection, and Borderlands 2 VR have helped bridge the gap during the wait, but it seems like Borderlands fan can finally rejoice as the third game is more than likely inbound.
