For those of you that didn’t know Spider-Man PS4 is going to be receiving a remaster for the PS5. You will be able to get this remaster when you buy the Ultimate edition of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales or simply by buying the normal edition and buying it through the game.
However, I’ve been pondering if this remaster is necessary? Spider-Man PS4 released in 2018 and was easily one of the best games of the year. This wasn’t just in terms of gameplay and story. The visuals were also, as a general rule, incredible. So, since Sony have come out recently and announced that 99% of PS4 games will be playable on PS5, why remaster a game that released only 2 years ago?
The list of ‘upgrades’ aren’t even that important to me. Nothing that substantial in my opinion has even been added to the game. Here is a list of improvements that have been added to the PS5 remaster:
- Re-made city assets w/ ray-tracing & ambient shadows
- 60 FPS Performance Mode
- Near-instant loading
- 3D Audio
- Increased population density
- New Photo Mode features
- New Trophies
Now don’t get me wrong all these improvements are great. A couple more are spoken about in this Playstation Blog article such as Peter Parker’s new recast face-actor and the new suits you get in this game. Nevertheless, these are all just gameplay improvements. The story hasn’t changed (as far as we’ve been told) and neither have any of the missions. Sure, as said above there are going to be a few new trophies but that’s not exactly going to give you a lot more to do.
Do We Need It?
Lets be honest the PS4 version of the game runs absolutely fine and since this is the case I feel justified to say that there are actually no major changes here. So why remaster something that’s only going to get minor improvements? Insomniac have many beloved franchises. A better idea could have been to give the original Ratchet and Clank trilogy a Spryo: Reignited trilogy-esque remaster. Even the Resistance series could have made a triumphant return. This would have significant improvements on the original PS2/PS3 games in terms of graphics and gameplay not just minor ones like were going to see in this game.
I feel like this remaster will be great and honestly the game does look absolutely incredible in the PS5’s engine. But, equally, it looked really good in the PS4’s engine too and with no real story of gameplay mechanics being improved I don’t see myself picking this game up. If I want to play Spider-Man PS4 I’m just going to play it on my PS4.
