Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct Highlights

No character too big

During the EVO 2018 Championship earlier this month, it was announced that Nintendo would be streaming a Direct dedicated to Super Smash Bros. Ultimatefollowing their E3 2018 stream which introduced us to the idea of every character from previous Super Smash Bros. entries returning. Now we have even more details about the game, including new character announcements, stages, and game modes.

The Direct starts with the announcement that the highly requested character, Simon Belmont, from the Castlevania series will be joining the roster, as well as his great-grandson Richter Belmont (acting as an echo fighter to Simon). Both characters are shown to be adopting their more classic designs, and of course, they’ll be using their signature weapons from the series including the whip and holy water.

Dracula’s Castle also appears as its own stage, with various monsters from the series appearing such as Werewolves, Medusa, and even Dracula himself. More surprising than the stage itself is the 34 music tracks it will include from various entries in the series. Dracula’s son Alucard will also be making his debut as an assist trophy.

Two more echo fighters were also announced – Chrom who originally starred in Fire Emblem Awakening, and Dark Samus from the Metroid Prime trilogy. Chrom acts as a more agile echo fighter for Roy, while Dark Samus echoes Metroid’s lead heroine Samus.

Keeping in tandem with returning characters from the series being the focus of the new titles, Smash Bros. Ultimate has also focused on classic stages making a return as well. The returning stages re-introduced during the direct were:

  • Pokémon Stadium (Pokémon)
  • Garden Of Hope (Pikmin)
  • Brinstar Depths (Metroid)
  • Summit (Ice Climbers)
  • Unova Pokémon League (Pokémon)
  • Magicant (Earthbound)
  • Gamer (Warioware)
  • Final Destination (Super Smash Bros.)

New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey will also be making an appearance, capping off the total number of stages at a whopping 103, a number that absolutely dwarfs Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s 56 total stages.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also includes a stage morph option. This allows players to select two stages that will switch between each other at random during the match, adding even more chaos to the mix.

There isn’t just a huge number of stages either, as the game will include over 800 music tracks that will be played during battle, and over 900 music tracks overall if menus are taken into account. Of course, players are also able to choose between which tracks will be played during matches. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will also be taking advantage of the Nintendo Switch’s portability and will allow players to create their own music playlists in-game which can be listened to in portable mode even when the screen is turned off.

A new battle option has also been added in the form of stamina battle. This new Smash mode makes the Super Smash Bros. gameplay more akin to other fighting games, as players will be working to whittle down another players health, as opposed to knocking them off a screen.

Another new twist to the formula comes in the form of chargeable Final Smash attacks. Instead of getting the chance to use a character’s signature powerful ability through destroying a Smash Ball item, players will have the option to gain access to a Final Smash attack via a meter that fills during the course of battle. However, there is a trade-off, as these Final Smash attacks will be weaker.

New battle modes are being added to this installment in the form of Squad Strike, Tournament Mode, and Smashdown.

Squad Strike is a “5 on 5 or 3 on 3 elimination style battle”. Players will be able to select from 3 or 5 different characters while chipping away at the other player’s selection of fighters. If a player ends the match with at least one character remaining, they win.

Tournament mode can host up to 32 players with optional CPU’s being included to round out the numbers. A bracket will be formulated with a loser being knocked out each round and the winners working their way through the brackets.

Smashdown will be a lengthy gauntlet of matches, as players pick a different character in the roster, with the selected characters being removed from the roster after each match.

Training mode will be getting an exclusive stage this time around, with a grid that allows players to measure the distance that attacks will launch opponents, with red, blue, and green lines estimating the trajectory at varying percentages.

Classic mode will be making a return as well. In this mode, players will be working through numerous stages and opponents, which will be specifically chosen depending on the fighter used.

Every new installment in the Super Smash Bros. franchise includes an abundance of new items, Pokémon and assist trophies, with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being no exception.

The Direct concluded with the reveal of another highly requested character – King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong Country series! Donkey Kong’s nemesis appears to be another heavy weight fighter. The reveal trailer showcases him using familiar items such as the boxing glove, blunderbuss and throwable crown which acts as a boomerang-like-projectile.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available for Nintendo Switch on December 7th, with more information yet to be revealed in the coming months. The Direct can be viewed here.
